Computer Science (A&S)
What you'll do in college
Housed alongside math and the natural sciences, this flavor treats computing as a science: heavy on theory, discrete math, algorithms, and proofs, with far fewer prescribed engineering credits. You still learn to program and take real systems courses, but the lighter requirements leave room to double major, chase a minor in a humanities field, or load up on pure math.
Many of these programs are small enough to get you into a research lab early, and the culture tends to reward curiosity over checklist credits. Be ready for proof-heavy problem sets and the freedom (and the responsibility) to shape your own path.
What you'll do after college
CS-as-a-science grads compete for the same software jobs as everyone else, but the theoretical grounding also opens doors to research, PhD programs, quantitative finance, data science, and interdisciplinary work where CS meets biology, linguistics, or economics. The day-to-day still often means writing and debugging code on a team, but a larger share end up in roles where the math genuinely matters.
Pay is strong and demand is high, and the flexible curriculum means many grads pivot across fields over a career. Grad school is a common next step, especially for the ones who caught the research bug in an undergrad lab.
